With death, Ravana’s anger has subsided. Those mountain like arms have lost their power. Ravana’s passions are subdued and his skill has waned. Today, Ravana’s faces that have relinquished life are three times as glowing… glowing, as on those days when Ravana towered over sages who subdued the five sense organs. Ravana had the power to make even those sages lose their sense of perception.

As you read Kamban's verse above, also listen to Madurai T N Seshagopalan's presentation of the same lines in the raga Shubha Pantuvarali. I had to 'make' this video because I didn't know how to add an audio clip to this post. சடை.

Guess what this weekend brought with it? A surprise Sunday movie, Prabhu has put on some (more) weight! Karthik, after years of absence, reapppears like the neighbourhood newspaper boy who resumes work without ado after an extended AWOL. That charming "Mr. Chandramouli! Hello! Sir!!" mischief is back in a flash. I loved that scene where Karthik looks to one and then to the other: "இவங்க சொல்றது நியாயம் தான்... அவங்க சொல்றதும் நியாயம் தான்..." As a line of dialogue it sounds flat boring preachy இல்ல? Cool Karthik style takes care of its comic impact. Yet again, a star of situational delivery.

புகைப்படத்தாலே ஓவியம் தீட்ட முடியும்-னா "மணி sir" கிட்ட தான் கேக்கணும் போல இருக்கு... camera கொஞ்சி விளையாடும் location...... முன்னாடி-லாம் I used to think அய்யோ one more இருட்டு படம்-டா சாமி. Somehow ரசனை மாறி வருது-னு நினைக்கறேன். His classic use of natural light is a visual treat to the eyes. Forget the story and who acted well or not. Watch the dance of light in and out, here and there, now and gone - visual treat தான்!

Aside: ever notice how interiors are so tasteful in Mani movies? Do you remember The Beatles sing Michelle Ma Belle in the background as Revati cooks in a high end Delhi flat, in மௌன ராகம்... That same Revati in அஞ்சலி serves Chapatis and curry in a floor seating dining arrangement for a family of four. The lights, the table, the place settings. In ராவணன் Aishwarya Rai has a modern and old tapestry - pots and pans hang nonchalantly from the ceiling. The switch board and plug-points look naturally grimy, the room doesn't have concealed wiring. That kitchen overlooks the water. Red wine to the cooking, a dangerous dance, and a fat candle light. Too much, I say!

Ravanan's animated gibberish - yet another human touch, dum dum daga daga daga dur.
